2016 – Back to Basics

“The best-laid plans of mice and men often go awry”  –  Robert Burns (1786)

This couldn’t be more apt for describing our start to 2016.

After months of planning for an old friend to join the team this year, things started going awry in December. Despite our best efforts to sort it out over the break, there was no resolution and the plan fell through.

We sincerely apologise for those who were affected. We had to cancel a number of jobs too big for Sean to do himself. It was a disappointing and embarrassing situation to be put in, and a huge learning curve for our business.

Post back surgery – Chaley is no longer in constant pain, although it is a long road to recovery. We will take each day as it comes and be thankful for all the good things in our life.

In 2016, Roofology will focus on our business strengths:

  • Small family business
  • Customer service
  • Roof tiling
  • Roof plumbing
  • Trouble shooting roof leaks
  • Specialist roofing repairs and maintenance

Sean will remain solely responsible for the roofing work. Chaley is available on the phone or by email. Like last year, the kids may tag along from time to time with Sean on a Saturday when he is quoting.

A new year brings with it a new chapter for us, both personally and professionally. We look forward to all that this year has to offer.

Roofology Update #2

Chaley had back surgery on Monday 16 November 2015. Everything went as planned and she was well looked after by her surgeon, Dr Soni Narula and the lovely nursing staff at St John of God Hospital in Murdoch.

Recovery is expected to take between 4 and 6 weeks, and the office will run at a lower capacity during this time. Chaley is able to move much more easily and is in less pain than before surgery. Sitting for extended periods is not recommended and she is not allowed to lift anything over 1kg while recovering.

We would like to thank all of our family, friends and clients for their well wishes and understanding over the last few weeks. Thanks to Jim and Julie for making a special trip to Perth to help out after Chaley got out of hospital. The extra help around the house was appreciated by the whole family.

Chaley’s new ‘stand-up’ workspace created by Sean and Jim, is working exactly as planned.

We hope to be up to date in the office by Friday 27 November 2015. Sean will be working through the week on jobs, and will be quoting/assessing on Saturdays up until the festive break.

Roofology will be closed for Christmas/New Year, from Wednesday 23 December 2015 and we will reopen on Monday 11 January 2016.

Roof Restoration

Our friends are renovating their home and as part of the renovation they wanted to update the existing gutters and down-pipes, as well as the colour of the roof.

For this particular project, Sean worked in conjunction Ryan from R&J Roof Restoration. Ryan high pressure cleaned the roof the day before Sean started the roof plumbing.

Sean installed new Colorbond valleys, gutters and down-pipes. Once the roof plumbing was completed, Sean re-pointed all of the ridge capping in flexible pointing. After that, Ryan finished the roof restoration with several coats of paint.

As you can see from the before and after pictures below, the finished results were impressive and our friends are very happy with their new roof.

Roofology Update

We thought we owed our clients an update. 

Over the last four months, I have been in intense pain associated with my lower back. It has been difficult to do my job to the best of my ability. Understandably, seeing me in pain has also caused stress on Sean and our family.


During this time I had ongoing visits to my chiropractor, and eventually an appointment with a pain specialist. I had a CT scan, MRI and nerve sleeve injection on Monday.

On Wednesday we were told that my lower back pain is caused by advanced L4-L5 disc degeneration with a large central L4-L5 disc protrusion. These results indicate that I definitely require surgery and I am now waiting for a consult with a surgeon towards the end of this month.

Unfortunately these results and lack of adequate pain relief from the procedure on Monday, mean I am still in a lot of pain. Unfortunately the pain medication I have been prescribed cause drowsiness, which makes keeping on top of things in the office more challenging.

Luckily, Sean’s back is in great shape and he is still able to get jobs completed. However the progress of quotes and assessments over the next couple of months will be reduced.

We would like to thank all of our clients, both old and new, for their ongoing patience and understanding about delays due in part to the rains, supplier issues and of course, my ongoing pain.

The warmer and drier seasons have returned, and hopefully bring with it some much needed relief.
